Tesla IncTSLA CEO Elon Musksaid on Thursday that the company will start deploying its full self-driving (FSD) driver assistance technology on its Cybertruck vehicles with version 12.5 of the software, while not providing a timeline for deploying the new version.
What Happened:“Yes, Cybertruck FSD releases with 12.5, which also finally merges the city and highway code,” Musk wrote on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.
Tesla‘s Cybertruck is the company’s latest offering which it started delivering to customers in late November. The vehicle is not equipped with the companys FSD technology as of now.
Musk said in May that the company would focus on improving FSD on a majority of its fleet before considering rolling it out on Cybertruck. FSD on Cybertruk, he then said, is a ‘few months’ away until version 12.5 of the technology.
Version 12.5, he then said, will start rolling out in late June. However, there seems to have been a delay as the company started rolling out FSD version 12.4.3 to customers only earlier this month. It is not clear when the company will start rolling out version 12.5.
Why It Matters:In late December, Musk said that the Cybertruck is the lowest priority for FSD software given its limited number of roads. There are about 5 million other Tesla cars on the road as compared to several hundred Cybertrucks, he said, dampening hopes of the software being implemented any time soon on the electric truck.
In March, the CEO said that he is contradicted daily between driving his Model S sedan and his stainless steel Cybertruck given that the Model S is equipped with FSD and the Cybertruck isn't.
Tesla is currently only ramping up the production of the Cybertruck. In late June, Tesla recalled nearly 12,000 Cybertrucks over concerns that their windshield wiper might stop working, hinting that it had shipped at least so many units by then.
The company is aiming to ramp production to deliver 250,000 units starting in 2025.
